nice or day finds documents containing the words 'nice' or 'day'
nice and day finds documents containing both 'nice' and 'day'
day* finds documents containing words starting with 'day' (eg: 'daytime')
(nice not day) and today finds documents containing 'today', plus 'nice' but not 'day'
